March 23, 2005

CHICAGO CHAPTER MEETING -- 5:30pm, Beef and Brandy Restaurant, 127 S State St, Chicago

The meeting was followed by a public program.

PUBLIC PROGRAM: a presentation and discussion of PRIVATERRA: PRIVACY AND SECURITY FOR PROGRESSIVE USE OF THE INTERNET
(privacy and security technology + technological education and support for nonprofits & NGOs)

7:30pm at DePaul Law School, Room 803 (25 E Jackson Blvd, Chicago)

Nonprofits are increasingly using technology as an integral tool in capturing, producing and communicating a wide array of information. Unfortunately, the enormous potential of these technologies coincides with greater risk. Not only is there an upsurge in surveillance and interception of online communications by many governments; users are also plagued by an explosion in computer viruses, unsolicited junk mail (spam) and other threats to their online privacy. In fact, it is precisely as nonprofits become more dependent on using technology in their work that they are at their most vulnerable.

Robert Guerra will talk about Privaterra's recent work -- implementing privacy and security technology, technological education and support in central and southern America, central Asia and central Africa. He will also present details of a new project whose aim it is to produce a guide for Human Rights Organizations of existing privacy enhancing technologies could be be used to secure communications and protect data.

Robert Guerra is a leading privacy advocate based in Toronto, Canada. He is presently the managing director of Privaterra, a non for profit organization that works with Human Rights NGOs to help them improve their information privacy and security practices. Privaterra has recently assisted groups in South and Central America, South Africa, and Central Asia. Robert is active within the international electronic privacy community, sitting on the board of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) and the program committee of the preeminent conference, "Computers, Freedom, Privacy". He has also been actively involved in all key meetings of the preparatory process of the UN World Summit on the Information Society, including as a panelist at the Pan European and Latin American Regional Meeting, and as Civil Society advisor to the Canadian delegation at several of the preparatory conferences.
