Paul Robeson: Artist and Citizen
A major multimedia, travelling exhibition will premier on the Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum.
The exhibit, which will feature a catalogue published by the Rutgers University Press and series of public programs for diverse adult and youth audiences, will travel to the African-American Museum in Los Angeles CA; to the Smithsonian Institution, National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC; and to the Museum of the City of New York in New York City.

Paul Robeson in Ocean Grove 1925/1998
  In 1925, at the start of their careers, Robeson and Lawrence Brown gave a concert before an enthusiastic audience of 3,000 in Ocean Grove's historic Great Auditorium. We are re-creating this concert on Sepember 19, 1998, with Bass/Baritone Kevin Maynor. The concert follows a day-long celebration featuring, among others, Marvin-Kazembe Jefferson, the Paul Robeson Chautauqua, reenacting parts of Robeson's life (3:00 PM), and Lloyd L.Brown, lifelong Robeson friend and author of The Young Paul Robeson: On my Journey Now, lecture and book-signing (4:00 PM).
  A major exhibition will be held in the HSOG Museum, including close to one hundred items, e.g. tickets, programs, reviews, record albums, and pictorial material on Robeson and other prominent African-Americans who have appeared in Ocean Grove, among them Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Roland Hays, Marian Anderson, Duke Ellington (12:00-6:00 PM). This exhibition will form the basis for a permanent Archive in the HSOG Museum. The HSOG invites contributions and loans of Robesoniana for this important exhibition.
  In addition, there will be be continuous Robeson audio and video tapes (12:00-6:00).
  Ocean Grove is a Methodist Camp Meeting, founded in 1869. The town has been designated as both a National and State Historic District. At its center is the Great Auditorium, built in 1894, and still in use today. Among other notables who appeared at the Auditorium before Robeson were Presidents McKinley, Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, and Enrico Caruso.
