professional and public life; together with speeches, mss. of writings in many
genres, research material, genealogical and financial records, printed matter,
clippings, memorabilia, motion pictures, audio and videotapes, and
photos. Topics of correspondence include National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People; Crisis, Phylon, and other periodicals; Du
Bois's sociological research and teaching at Atlanta University; Niagara
Movement, Pan-African Congresses, Council on African Affairs, and World Peace
Council; dealings with Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, and funds and
foundations (including Phelps-Stokes and Rosenwald funds); conditions of life
for black Americans, particularly black students, black education, and black
colleges and universities; founding of the United Nations; and race relations,
slave trade, lynching, segregation, discrimination, colonialism, communism,
trade unionism, Africa, and world peace. Research material includes files on
Africa, black soldiers in World War I, and files for Encyclopedia of the Negro
and Encyclopaedia Africana. Correspondents include Horace Mann Bond, Edward
Franklin Frazier, John Hope, Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Rayford
W. Logan, Paul Robeson, Arthur Barnett Spingarn, Joel Elias Spingarn,
Walter Francis White, Doxey Alphonso Wilkerson, and Carter
G. Woodson. Acquired chiefly from Mr. Du Bois's widow, Shirley Graham Du Bois,
